Connectivity in Uruguay

In Uruguay your Simzora eSIM connects as a roaming line on the country's main mobile networks, Antel, Movistar and Claro, so the phone selects whichever of them is strongest where you happen to be. Coverage is reliable across the busy parts of Montevideo, the beach districts of Punta del Este and the old town of Colonia del Sacramento, which is where most visitors spend their time. Be realistic with your expectations, though, because signal thins out in the rural interior, on remote stretches of coast, over open water near the offshore islands and in the low hill country away from towns. Treat the three named cities as the dependable zone and plan for slower or patchy data once you travel well beyond them.

The eSIM works as a data-only international roaming line, so it carries your internet traffic but does not give you a Uruguayan phone number and cannot send or receive ordinary calls or SMS. Keep your usual home SIM in the phone for any bank or login one-time passcodes that arrive by text, and let the eSIM handle the data. For it to connect you must turn Data Roaming ON for the Simzora line, which is the expected behaviour for this kind of plan and adds no extra charge from us. Apps that run over data, including WhatsApp for messages and calls, work normally once the line is online.

Install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you travel, because most plans begin the moment they first connect to a network in Uruguay rather than at the time of purchase. After you land, if the line shows No Service or will not pick up data, switch Aeroplane Mode on for about fifteen seconds and then off again, which nudges the phone to search for a local network. If it still does not attach, confirm the Simzora line is selected for data, check that Data Roaming is on, and then restart the handset.

One honest note about how roaming works: your data may leave the network through a gateway in another country rather than locally in Uruguay, so some sites and apps can open in a different language or show prices in another currency, and a few speed tests may read lower than a local SIM. This is normal for a roaming eSIM and does not mean the line is faulty. For anything tied strictly to your home identity, such as banking OTP codes, rely on your home SIM as noted above.

SET UP ON YOUR PHONE

Installed in minutes, before you fly

Do it on home Wi-Fi the day you buy. Three small steps:

1 / 3
Scan the QR, or skip it entirely

The one-tap Install button on your delivery screen does it without any scanning. Prefer the QR? Open your email on a second screen. Samsung? Paste the manual code, it always works.

2 / 3
Set up your device

On Wi-Fi: set the eSIM as your data line, then turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line only, normal for travel eSIMs, costs nothing extra. Your home SIM stays untouched.

3 / 3
That's it, land connected

Your plan starts per the policy on its card, at purchase, or first connection in your destination. One rule forever: never delete the eSIM; top up instead.

Uruguay eSIM FAQs

Which networks will I get in Uruguay?

Your eSIM roams across Uruguay's main operators, Antel, Movistar and Claro, and the phone automatically connects to whichever gives the best signal in your location. You do not pick one by hand, and coverage is strongest in Montevideo, Punta del Este and Colonia del Sacramento.

Do I get a Uruguay phone number or SMS?

No, this is a data-only plan, so it does not come with a Uruguayan number and cannot send or receive standard calls or text messages. Keep your home SIM active for any OTP codes sent by SMS, and use WhatsApp or similar apps over the data connection for messaging and calls.

How much data do I get and when does the plan start?

You get the data allowance shown on the plan you buy, with no genuinely unlimited option, so choose a size that matches your trip length and usage. Most plans start on their first connection to a Uruguayan network rather than at purchase, which is why we suggest installing on Wi-Fi before you fly.

Will it work outside Montevideo, Punta del Este and Colonia?

Yes across towns and main coastal routes, but expect data to weaken in the rural interior, on remote beaches, in the low hill country and around the offshore islands. If you plan to stay at a countryside estancia or head into remote areas, download maps and essentials in advance while you still have a strong signal.
