Your foreign phone keeps working — no IMEI registration
Turkey blocks unregistered foreign phones from local SIMs after ~120 days. A roaming eSIM isn't a local SIM, so your data keeps working without registering your IMEI.
Connectivity in Turkey
Plans roam on Turkcell and Vodafone Turkey — Turkcell's 4.5G network is the country's fastest and covers Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir, Antalya and the entire Aegean/Mediterranean coast extremely well. Expect fast LTE almost everywhere tourists go, including Cappadocia and the ski resorts.
Turkey enforces an IMEI registration rule: foreign phones used with local Turkish SIMs are blocked after roughly 120 days unless a registration fee is paid. Roaming eSIMs operate outside that system — long-stay visitors, students and remote workers keep data working without registering.
Istanbul metro tunnels and older stone buildings can attenuate signal; coverage recovers instantly outdoors.
City specifics: Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir hold 30–80 Mbps on Turkcell's 4.5G; Antalya and the resort corridor from Bodrum to Alanya are provisioned for tourist load and stay fast even in high season. Cappadocia (Göreme, Uçhisar) is solid outdoors — cave hotels attenuate signal indoors, but balconies and terraces work fine.
Practicalities: Istanbul Airport's arrivals hall has strong signal, so your eSIM connects before you clear customs. Intercity buses and the YHT high-speed rail hold LTE for most of the route. Roaming traffic may exit via a non-Turkish gateway, so some websites may treat you as browsing from abroad — most long-stay users only notice this as a benefit for app calling.
- ✓Install on hotel or airport Wi-Fi; validity starts at first network connection in Turkey.
- ✓If data stalls after landing, toggle Airplane Mode — the phone re-selects the stronger partner network.

Turkey eSIM — frequently asked
Does this avoid Turkey's 120-day IMEI block?+−
The block applies to foreign phones using local Turkish SIMs. A roaming eSIM isn't a local SIM, so it keeps working — that's a fact of how roaming works, not a workaround we control. Rules can change; we'll always say so plainly.
Which networks does it use in Turkey?+−
Turkcell (4.5G) and Vodafone TR, selected automatically.
Is there 5G in Istanbul?+−
Turkey runs fast 4.5G (LTE-Advanced) nationally; true 5G is limited. Real-world speeds in Istanbul are excellent on 4.5G.
Do I get a Turkish phone number?+−
No — data only. WhatsApp and FaceTime calls work normally on your existing number.
Can I top up mid-trip?+−
Yes, standard plans top up with no new QR. Unlimited plans can't be topped up — buy a new plan instead.
