Connectivity in Rwanda
Your Simzora eSIM connects in Rwanda as an international roaming line on the local mobile networks, and it will latch onto whichever of MTN or Airtel gives the best signal where you are standing. Coverage is strong across Kigali, where you can expect steady mobile data in the city centre, hotels and the main business districts. It also works well in Musanze, the base for gorilla trekking near Volcanoes National Park, and in the lakeside town of Gisenyi on Lake Kivu. Be realistic about the gaps: signal thins out on rural roads, in remote hills, on higher mountain trails and around some stretches of Lake Kivu, so treat maps and messages as things to sort out before you leave a well covered town.
The plan is data-only. You do not get a Rwandan phone number and you cannot send or receive normal local calls or SMS, so keep your usual home SIM in the phone for any bank or login one-time passcodes that arrive by text. For the eSIM line, the one setting that matters is Data Roaming: it must be switched ON for the Simzora line, because the eSIM reaches the Rwandan networks as a roaming guest. This is normal and carries no extra cost on your plan, it is simply how the connection is authorised. Apps that run over data, including WhatsApp for messages and calls, work as usual once you have a signal.
Most Simzora plans start counting from your first connection to a network in Rwanda, so install and set up the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly rather than trying to do it at the airport. After you land, turn the phone off and on, or switch Airplane Mode (Flight Mode) on for about fifteen seconds and then off, to prompt it to search for a local network. If it still shows No Service after a few minutes, check that Data Roaming is on for the Simzora line and, if needed, select MTN or Airtel manually in your network settings instead of leaving it on automatic.
One honest note on how roaming data behaves: because this is an international roaming line, your traffic may leave the country through a gateway outside Rwanda rather than through a purely local route. In day to day use this is not something you will notice, but it can occasionally mean a website defaults to another language or region, or that a service treats you as connecting from elsewhere. If a site or app looks off, that routing is usually the reason, and it does not mean your connection has failed.

Installed in minutes, before you fly
Do it on home Wi-Fi the day you buy. Three small steps:
The one-tap Install button on your delivery screen does it without any scanning. Prefer the QR? Open your email on a second screen. Samsung? Paste the manual code, it always works.
On Wi-Fi: set the eSIM as your data line, then turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line only, normal for travel eSIMs, costs nothing extra. Your home SIM stays untouched.
Your plan starts per the policy on its card, at purchase, or first connection in your destination. One rule forever: never delete the eSIM; top up instead.
Rwanda eSIM FAQs
Which networks will I get in Rwanda?+−
Your eSIM roams on the local Rwandan networks, MTN and Airtel, and picks whichever gives the better signal in your location. You do not choose a fixed operator in advance, though you can select one manually if automatic selection struggles. Coverage is reliable in Kigali, Musanze and Gisenyi, and thinner in rural and remote areas.
Do I get a Rwanda phone number or SMS?+−
No, this is a data-only eSIM, so it does not come with a Rwandan phone number and cannot receive standard local calls or text messages. Keep your home SIM active in the phone for any OTP codes sent by SMS. For messaging and calls, use data based apps such as WhatsApp, which work normally once you are connected.
How much data do I get and when does the plan start?+−
You choose a data allowance when you buy, and there is no fake unlimited option, so pick a size that suits your trip. Most plans begin counting from your first connection to a network in Rwanda, not from the moment of purchase. Because of this, install the eSIM on Wi-Fi before travel and let it connect once you arrive.
Will the eSIM work for gorilla trekking around Musanze and Volcanoes National Park?+−
You should get a usable signal in Musanze town itself, where MTN and Airtel coverage is reasonable. Once you head up into the higher forest and mountain trails of Volcanoes National Park, expect coverage to weaken or drop out entirely. Download any maps, permits or messages you need before setting off from town.
