Connectivity in Mongolia

Your eSIM connects as an international roaming line on Mongolia's main networks, Mobicom, Unitel and Skytel, switching between them automatically to pick up the stronger signal. Expect dependable 4G and LTE across Ulaanbaatar, where the great majority of the country's coverage is concentrated, and workable signal in and around Kharkhorin. Be realistic about the rest, Mongolia is vast and thinly populated, so once you leave the capital and the main towns the signal thins quickly, and across the open Gobi, the wider steppe and the mountain country you should expect long stretches with a weak connection or none at all.

This is a data-only line, so there is no Mongolian phone number and no local SMS or voice calling on the eSIM. For it to work you need Data Roaming switched on for the eSIM line, which is normal for this kind of plan and carries no extra cost, since the roaming is already included in what you paid. Keep your usual SIM in the phone for anything tied to your own number, such as bank or login OTP codes, and use WhatsApp over the data connection to call and message as you normally would.

Most plans start on their first connection in Mongolia rather than when you buy them, so install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly and leave the actual connection until you land. When you arrive, if the line shows 'No Service' for a few minutes, turn Aeroplane Mode on and off, or restart the phone, to nudge it onto a local network. It usually latches on at the airport in Ulaanbaatar, and after that first connection the plan is running.

One honest note on how the routing works, because this is a roaming line your data may exit through an internet gateway outside Mongolia, so the occasional website or app might treat you as though you are browsing from another country. It is a minor quirk rather than a blocker, and everyday tools like maps, messaging and browsing work as normal. If any of that routing ever changes, we will say so plainly rather than dress it up.

SET UP ON YOUR PHONE

Installed in minutes, before you fly

Do it on home Wi-Fi the day you buy. Three small steps:

1 / 3
Scan the QR, or skip it entirely

The one-tap Install button on your delivery screen does it without any scanning. Prefer the QR? Open your email on a second screen. Samsung? Paste the manual code, it always works.

2 / 3
Set up your device

On Wi-Fi: set the eSIM as your data line, then turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line only, normal for travel eSIMs, costs nothing extra. Your home SIM stays untouched.

3 / 3
That's it, land connected

Your plan starts per the policy on its card, at purchase, or first connection in your destination. One rule forever: never delete the eSIM; top up instead.

Mongolia eSIM FAQs

Which networks will I get in Mongolia?

Your data roams on Mobicom, Unitel and Skytel, Mongolia's main operators, with the eSIM choosing whichever gives the stronger signal at the time. Coverage is at its best in Ulaanbaatar and reasonable around Kharkhorin, but it thins quickly across the open Gobi and the remote steppe and mountain areas.

Do I get a Mongolia phone number or SMS?

No, this is a data-only plan with no Mongolian number, so there is no local SMS or voice calling on the eSIM line. Keep your own SIM active in the phone so bank and login OTP codes still reach you, and use WhatsApp over the data to call and message on your usual number.

How much data do I get, and when does the plan start?

You choose the data amount when you buy, and each plan comes with a set allowance for a set number of days rather than a fake unlimited pool. Most plans begin on their first connection in Mongolia, not at purchase, so install over Wi-Fi before you fly and the clock starts when you land and connect.

Will the eSIM work out in the Gobi and the countryside?

In and around Ulaanbaatar and larger towns like Kharkhorin, yes, you should stay online on 4G or LTE. Out in the open Gobi, the steppe and the mountains the signal drops to patchy or nothing on every network, so download offline maps and share your plans before you head into remote areas.
