eSIM for Mongolia

Your eSIM connects as an international roaming line on Mongolia's main networks, switching between them automatically to pick up the stronger signal. Expect dependable 4G and LTE across Ulaanbaatar, where the great majority of the country's coverage is concentrated, and workable signal in and around Kharkhorin. Be realistic about the rest, Mongolia is vast and thinly populated, so once you leave the capital and the main towns the signal thins quickly, and across the open Gobi, the wider steppe and the mountain country you should expect long stretches with a weak connection or none at all.

This is a data-only line, so there is no Mongolian phone number and no local SMS or voice calling on the eSIM. For it to work you need Data Roaming switched on for the eSIM line, which is normal for this kind of plan and carries no extra cost, since the roaming is already included in what you paid. Keep your usual SIM in the phone for anything tied to your own number, such as bank or login OTP codes, and use WhatsApp over the data connection to call and message as you normally would.

Most plans start on their first connection in Mongolia rather than when you buy them, so install the eSIM over Wi-Fi before you fly and leave the actual connection until you land. When you arrive, if the line shows 'No Service' for a few minutes, turn Aeroplane Mode on and off, or restart the phone, to nudge it onto a local network. It usually latches on at the airport in Ulaanbaatar, and after that first connection the plan is running.

One honest note on how the routing works, because this is a roaming line your data may exit through an internet gateway outside Mongolia, so the occasional website or app might treat you as though you are browsing from another country. It is a minor quirk rather than a blocker, and everyday tools like maps, messaging and browsing work as normal. If any of that routing ever changes, we will say so plainly rather than dress it up.

• Install the eSIM over home Wi-Fi a day or two before you travel, then leave it to connect once you land, as most plans only start counting from that first connection in Mongolia.
• In your phone settings, turn Data Roaming on for the Simzora eSIM line only, which is expected for a roaming plan and adds no extra charge, while your home SIM can stay set to no roaming.
• Distances between towns are huge and coverage falls away fast outside Ulaanbaatar, so download offline maps and anything else you need before heading into the Gobi or out to Kharkhorin.
