Connectivity in Maldives
Your eSIM connects as an international roaming line on Dhiraagu and Ooredoo, the two networks that cover the Maldives, using whichever gives the stronger signal. Around the capital you get fast 4G and LTE, with 5G in and around Malé and the newer districts of Hulhumalé, and dependable coverage across the inhabited islands near the main atolls. It thins out as you move away from the population centres, so on the far resort atolls and the long stretches of open sea between them the signal can slow right down or drop away entirely.
Because this is a roaming line rather than a local SIM, you need to switch on Data Roaming for the eSIM once it is set as your mobile data. That is normal for a travel eSIM and costs nothing extra. The roaming setting simply lets the eSIM register on Dhiraagu or Ooredoo. It is data-only, with no Maldives phone number and no SMS, so keep your usual SIM active in another phone for bank and login OTP codes, while WhatsApp and iMessage keep working over the data connection.
Velana International Airport, just across the water from Malé, has strong signal in the arrivals area, so the eSIM usually connects soon after you land and before your onward transfer. If it shows No Service at first, switch Airplane Mode on and off once to nudge the phone into registering with a local network. Bear in mind that speedboat and seaplane transfers cross open water where there is no mobile coverage, so expect to be offline until you reach your island.
On the more distant resort islands, mobile coverage can be patchy or absent, and many resorts expect guests to use the island Wi-Fi for calls and browsing, so it is worth checking your resort's setup before you rely on data out there. One honest note on routing, roaming traffic may leave through a gateway outside the Maldives, so the odd website or app can treat you as if you are browsing from another country. Everyday tools like maps and messaging work as normal, and if that routing ever changes we will say so plainly.

On Wi-Fi: set the eSIM as your data line, then turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line only, normal for travel eSIMs, costs nothing extra. Your home SIM stays untouched.
Your plan starts per the policy on its card, at purchase, or first connection in your destination. One rule forever: never delete the eSIM; top up instead.
Maldives eSIM FAQs
Which networks will I get in Maldives?+−
Your data roams on Dhiraagu and Ooredoo, the two networks in the Maldives, with the eSIM using whichever gives the stronger signal. You get fast 4G and LTE around Malé and Hulhumalé, with 5G in the capital area, while coverage thins on the far resort atolls and over the open sea between islands.
Do I get a Maldives phone number or SMS?+−
No, this is a data-only eSIM with no Maldives number and no SMS or calls on the line. Keep your own SIM active in another phone so bank and login OTP codes still reach you, and use WhatsApp or iMessage over the data to stay in touch on your usual accounts.
How much data do I get and when does the plan start?+−
You choose the data amount when you buy, and most plans start on your first connection to a Maldives network rather than at the moment of purchase, so you can install over Wi-Fi before you fly. If you run low, you can usually add more data to the same eSIM without scanning a new QR code.
Will I have signal at my resort on a remote atoll?+−
It depends on how far out the resort sits. Islands near the main atolls hold a decent Dhiraagu or Ooredoo signal, but on the more distant resort atolls mobile coverage can be patchy or missing, and many resorts expect you to use their Wi-Fi. During speedboat and seaplane transfers you will be offline over open water, so download anything you need beforehand.
