Using your Egypt eSIM

Plans roam on the two networks with the widest reach across the country. Expect dependable LTE in Cairo and Giza, along the Nile through Luxor and Aswan, and up the coast at Alexandria. The signal is strongest in and around the places travellers actually go, and thins the moment you head out into open country.

Coverage holds up well in the main tourist corridors: Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor and Aswan all keep solid LTE, and the Red Sea resorts of Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh are well served. Where it softens is the open desert, the remote stretches of the Nile between towns, and the Sinai interior. Plan for gaps on long desert drives and out at dive sites away from the resort strip.

Cairo Airport's arrivals hall has good signal, so the eSIM usually connects before you reach the customs desk. Because this is a roaming line, your data may exit through a gateway outside Egypt, so some websites and apps can treat you as browsing from abroad. If a service behaves oddly, that is usually why.

  • Install and set up the eSIM on Wi-Fi before you fly; the plan only starts once it first connects to a network in Egypt.
  • Set the eSIM as your mobile-data line and switch on Data Roaming for that line only, leaving your home SIM untouched for calls and texts.
  • If you see 'No Service' after landing in Cairo, flip Airplane Mode on and off once so the phone re-selects the partner network.

Frequently asked questions

Fast local partner networks, selected automatically. Both give strong LTE in Cairo, Alexandria, Luxor, Aswan and the Red Sea resorts, and coverage thins out in the open desert and the Sinai interior.
No. It is data-only, with no phone number and no SMS or calls on the eSIM line. Keep your own SIM active in your phone for OTP codes and normal calls; WhatsApp and FaceTime still work over data on your existing number.
Standard plans top up with no new QR code needed. Unlimited plans can be topped up too, which adds another full period of the same plan on the same eSIM rather than extra gigabytes, with no new QR code.
Inside Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh and their resort areas, yes. Out on the open desert, along remote Nile stretches, or deep in the Sinai interior, expect coverage to drop or disappear, so download maps and tickets before you set off.
