Connectivity in Chile
Your eSIM connects as an international roaming line on Entel or Movistar, the two largest mobile networks in Chile, switching automatically to whichever signal is stronger. Expect fast 5G and LTE across Santiago, Valparaíso, Viña del Mar and Concepción, along with the Ruta 5 highway that runs down the central valley. Coverage softens in the high Andes, out in the Atacama Desert and across the far south of Patagonia, where every Chilean network thins out equally.
Chile is extraordinarily long and thin, stretching more than 4,000 kilometres, so a good signal tends to follow the populated middle rather than the extremes. In the north, towns like San Pedro de Atacama get a usable connection, but it drops away quickly on the desert roads and salt flats around them. Down south you will find solid coverage in Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales and little to none deep inside Torres del Paine. One honest caveat: Easter Island (Rapa Nui) sits thousands of kilometres offshore and is rarely covered by roaming plans, so plan to be offline there.
The eSIM usually connects while you are still in the arrivals hall at Santiago's Arturo Merino Benítez airport, before you clear passport control and customs, so you can book a ride or message home right away. Because this is a roaming line, your data may route through a gateway outside Chile, which means the odd local site or banking app could treat you as if you are browsing from abroad. It is a minor quirk rather than a blocker, and everyday tools like maps and messaging work as normal.

On Wi-Fi: set the eSIM as your data line, then turn Data Roaming ON for the eSIM line only, normal for travel eSIMs, costs nothing extra. Your home SIM stays untouched.
Your plan starts per the policy on its card, at purchase, or first connection in your destination. One rule forever: never delete the eSIM; top up instead.
Chile eSIM FAQs
Which networks and coverage do I get in Chile?+−
Your data runs on Entel and Movistar, Chile's two biggest operators, with the eSIM choosing whichever signal is stronger at the time. You get fast 5G and LTE in Santiago, Valparaíso and Concepción, with coverage easing in the Atacama Desert, the high Andes and deep Patagonia.
Can I make calls or send texts on the eSIM?+−
No. This is a data-only plan with no phone number, so there is no SMS or voice calling on the eSIM line. Keep your usual SIM in the phone to receive bank OTP codes and take regular calls, and use WhatsApp or FaceTime over the data connection to stay reachable on your own number.
Can I top up if I start running low on data?+−
Standard plans can be topped up with more data at any time, with no new QR code to scan and no reinstall. Unlimited plans cannot be topped up, so once one is used up you simply buy a new plan to carry on.
Will it work in Patagonia or the Atacama Desert?+−
In the towns, usually yes. Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales and San Pedro de Atacama all pick up a signal on Entel or Movistar. Out on the desert roads, the salt flats and inside parks like Torres del Paine, coverage drops to little or nothing, so download offline maps before you head out. Easter Island is generally not covered at all.
